My husband's grandmother, very pregnant with his mother, was in Dresden for the bombing. The house she was in was destroyed and she spent days trapped in its basement, terrified for her life. She survived but of course many didn't. The destruction was horrible.
This is one of the cornerstone stories of his family.
My husband loved his grandmother very much. When he tells this story, the point of it is sadness at her suffering and I am sorry for her terror in those days. The city was destroyed. No one there was untouched by the brutality of it. I'm sorry for all their suffering.
I'm not sorry we, the United States, fought the war. Defeated the Nazis. Liberated those in the camps we could. Mourned the millions already dead.
I would not keep Dresden safe at the expense of stopping Hitler. And neither would my husband or his family. In spite of their personal horrors, they too are glad we won.
Hamas controls Gaza, the Palestinians and attacks on Israel. The Palestinians are given billions of dollars annually which Hamas uses to oppress the Palestinians and attack Israel. Israel send text messages letting the Palestinians were they will bomb and Hamas set them up as “human shields.” When Hamas returns the hostages the war is over. Hamas has young children, women and the elderly hostage so because they know Israel must keep fighting to save their citizens.
