Austria. Sold apples with her father in the train station as a young girl. I think she was from Linz. That’s all I know, except she got out before Shoah. I’m writing about this too. Because there’s so much I don’t know.…
She adored her father according to my mother. But once my mother let it slip that she thought my grandmother‘s father was murdered. I hate to bring up Jewish death but it does circle around our story as a people. Becky made it to Brooklyn. Interesting life, from wealthy married woman to divorcée to matchmaker.
Very touched by your story and am glad you shared the model of the synagogue. I can only imagine tour patrons are typically more interested in the tragedies, rather than the surviving.
Interesting the idea that terrorism is more about the terrorist than the victim - true.
I also think if the intent was to "wipe out" jewish life all together then only talking about the holocaust and other attrocities does eliminate Jewish life, or at least the knowledge of it. Profoundly sad! and do not apologize for crying! it is a healthy reponse! It was, however, nice of you to send an apology to the guide. Can you imagine having to retell the trauma day after day? :(
I think the tour is good and necessary, but it is clearly intended for an Austrian non-Jewish audience. There needs to be both, but there is a larger exhibit launching in fall and I’m hopeful it will provide some balance.
So deeply moved by your writing this morning, Sarah. Thank you.

I would love to know more about her story.
